BREAKING: Everton Wield Big Stick, Sack Manager Ronald Koeman
The authorities of Everton Football Club have wielded the big stick on manager Ronald Koeman; sacking him after Sunday’s 5-2 home defeat by Arsenal which left them in the Premier League relegation zone.
The club made their announcement shortly after 1.30pm on Monday, with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and CEO Robert Elstone having earlier arrived at Finch Farm.
It is understood that Everton owner Farhad Moshiri had given Koeman his backing a fortnight ago after their 1-0 defeat by Burnley, but the Toffees then drew at Brighton and lost to Lyon, in the Europa League, before their Goodison Park humbling by Arsenal.
A statement said the club “would like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given to the club over the past 16 months”.
The Toffees have spent heavily in the summer on players like Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Jordan Pickford, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney but now lie 18th in the table having made their third worst start to a Premier League campaign.
“I still believe I can change the whole situation,” Koeman had said on Sunday, “adding that he believes the players are behind him.
Koeman became the third Premier League managerial casualty of the season after Frank de Boer left Crystal Palace and Craig Shakespeare was sacked by Leicester.
